4.8 out of 10

Standout Tracks: "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors", "An End Has a Start", "Bones"

An End Has a Start is the highly anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed The Back Room. Here, listeners expect even bigger choruses, catchier hooks, and more excellent music from the geniuses that brought us "Munich." But then again, this album is a sophomore effort, and everyone knows that this album could make or break Editors. Editors fight off the looming fear of making a crappy second album with the amazing single "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors," a proggy ballad that embodies Editors' new feel. Overall though, this album is extremely similar to Editors' debut, and may even be better thought of as a companion to The Back Room. ~Joe Pinsker

For all the attention and hype this album has been receiving throughout the internet and how much potential their previous album, The Back Room, displayed, I was expecting a bit more from this newest work by the Editors. Don’t get me wrong, songs like “Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors” and the title track “An End Has a Start” flawlessly integrate catchy guitar and synth with upbeat drums and expressive, sing-along vocals. I was particularly impressed with how “Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors” was able to drop and rebuild in intensity throughout the track almost to perfection; again, showing the talent and potential this band has. Yet besides these select tracks and a few others such as “Bones” and “Spiders”, An End Has a Start feels a bit bland - all good, but never reaching the next step of greatness. Just like their debut album, this work does little to separate Editors from the rest of the alternative scene and I honestly don’t see what all the fuss about this band is about. This band’s sound is still growing and their end is far from starting, but I’m still stuck with the opinion that this album is merely “good” and nothing more.

Somehow, Editors’ follow-up to The Back Room is darker, deeper, and even more broody than its predecessor. After their somewhat giddy yet extremely solid debut, listeners asked for more maturity from these Brits. And after hearing the opening track, “Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors,” An End Has a Start seemed to be exactly what listeners were looking for: a little bit more depth, but still the same soaring choruses they’d grown to enjoy from The Back Room as Editors nestled into their comfortable spot in alternative music. Unfortunately, no later song recreates the magic of “Smokers.” The title track comes close to capturing the glory that “Munich” and “Lights” possessed, but it’s not all the way there. And from there, the album goes downhill with the exceptions of “Bones,” a trademark Editors track with a U2 riff, and “Escape the Nest,” a slower, deeper epic with a killer hook. Editors still create above average melodies and follow them to the end of every song, but there’s really nothing new here. The record’s low point is “Push Your Head Towards the Air,” when Editors totally go Coldplay on our asses. Editors may need to edit their current sound to get back the listeners drawn in by the danceable “Munich,” (on their debut) which by far remains their best track. After The Back Room, this album seems like a huge letdown.
