Album Art Rating: 6 “Turn a new page, tear the old one out”. That is the words Tom Gray utters in the title track stunner “How We Operate”. The first studio album released by Gomez under their new ATO label, How We Operate goes back-to-the-basics while also defining a new refined sound for a band evolving from their past with Virgin Records. After winning the 1998 Album of the Year in England for Bring It On and subsequently getting dropped after a couple of unsuccessful albums (in sales that is), Gomez comes back and proves to be one of the most beautiful sounds coming out of the UK currently. How We Operate blends acoustic, delicate blues-inspired guitars with almost dreamy vocal styles and poetic lyrics that actually convey emotion. Yet Gomez is not just another acoustic band with flimsy ballads, in fact, they are not that at all. The band throws in little hooks and crescendos to full strength choruses complete with rock drums and blaring guitars to complete the listener’s experience through the album. In the opener, “Notice”, acoustic guitars and a murmuring bass line sets the mood then builds to a poppy chorus focusing on the singer’s mellifluous voice echoing in the foreground. This seemingly flawless flow of sounds continues to emerge in the following tracks, with the genre-defying “How We Operate” and “Hamoa Beach”. Rock hooks drive “Girlshapedlovedrug” and “Tear Your Love Apart” with pounding guitar combined with complimentary drums. Slower songs like “Don’t Make Me Laugh” come to life with relatable lyrics and an almost weeping voice. Even when the music in the background is upbeat as in the song “Cry on Demand”, the vocals are so full of emotion and relevance that the breaks to slower divisions become undeniably effective. It is these vocals that dominate almost every track that set Gomez’s songs apart from the rest of the today’s music. With three singers in the six-man band, varying vocal styles add another depth to the music and whenever the three voices start to echo each other, the songs just reach a new high like in “Charley Patton Songs”. Because of this reason, Gomez’s music cannot be fitted to one genre as the inspiration of almost every type of music can be found somewhere on How We Operate. Fortunately for us, it seems that the best of every world has been combined to make one stunning work of art.

SCORE: 8

Justin's Bottom Line: How We Operate will probably not get much media attention or have off-the-charts sales, but Gomez proves in this new release that they are in a league of their own when it comes to producing great music. Don’t let this beauty slip through the cracks, if you are any lover of music, go buy this album.

SCORE: 7

Joe: Gomez’s versatility shines through on this album. The band’s sound ranges from soothing to riled-up over the course of the album, and sometimes even over the course of single songs. In a technical sense, How We Operate is a musical masterpiece, and it can be just as much a masterpiece to most listeners.

SCORE: 7

Aaron: A unique blend of flavors to create a sensational listening experience, from slow soft sounds to fiesty moments. Being a newcomer to Gomez I am taken by surprise and look forward to more. As a side note, after listening to How We Operate for a while now, I have come to realize that although it is a great listen, It gets better when you stop and realize that their rythms stick with you. Great album.
