Muse (Black Holes & Revelations)

Released: 07/12/06 - 11 Tracks - (49:40) - (A&E Records Limited)

Standout Tracks: "Map of the Problematique", "Assassin", "Knights of Cydonia"

Album Art Rating: 7Once in a while, a band comes along whose sound is so new and refreshing, it feels as if all other artists have become obsolete. Muse’s most recent release, following Origin of Symmetry in 2005, showcases and maintains the band’s intense creativity and vitality. It was the progression through Black Holes and Revelations that led me to determine that Muse is quite possibly the only band I will be listening to in the near future. Naysayers will be quick to point out Muse’s almost copycat style of famed band Radiohead (which is valid, considering their shared use of synths, piano melodies, and singer Matt Bellamy’s dead-on Thom Yorke impersonation), but similarities or not, I regard Muse as one of the most consistent and creative bands I’ve ever listened to. With their unique building synths and pounding guitar, Muse is already superior to most of the bands on today’s alternative music scene; it seems that every song is completely different from its predecessor. Muse does not hesitate to use such unique instruments as harps and an en-tire Moroccan string section in their music, straying away from traditional rock guitar but maintaining powerful and creative riffs. Yet it is Matt Bellamy’s vocals that push the album’s quality over the top. Whether it accompanies an acoustic guitar in “City of Delusion,” or shouts bloody outrage in “Knights of Cydonia,” Bellamy proves how distinguished he is from other rock vocalists in that he can actually sing. It is these collective factors that demonstrate how deft Muse is in their art: while they lack the room shaking bass and isolated pounding guitar typical to rock, it is their skill with the instruments that they use, (the piano, the guitar, the voice) that makes Black Holes one of the standout albums of the year. Tracks like “Knights of Cydonia” and “Supermassive Black Hole” show that Muse can produce the two or three hits needed for a successful album, though as this album demonstrates through its consistency, Muse is of a quality that produces far more than the minimum.

SCORE: 8.5

Trevor's Bottom Line: Muse could just be one of the freshest and creative bands out there for me right now. You can count on the rest of their work to be just as well thought out. If you liked this album, there’s much more to keep you interested.

SCORE: 8

Joe's Bottom Line: This album never ceases to amaze me. The sheer grandeur of each element of this band is inspiring. Muse infuses high-tech effects into their music correctly, and I love every minute of it.

MUSE is one of the best bands due to their originality. In this album they truly explore new formulas. Nevertheless, one can only appreciate their music fully in a concert. Their energy and passion on stage is amazing.

This is 10/10 material, specially LIVE.
