Unified Theory (Unified Theory) - Mr. Music ReviewIn the wake of singer Shannon Hoon’s death, former Blind Melon members Brad Smith (bass) and Christopher Thorn (guitar) searched for a new singer to continue on their band under the same name. However, when Chris Shin joined the cast in 1998, the sound proved something of new potential, eventually leading to the new name of Unified Theory. With Shinn’s high register style of singing combined with the modern rock instrumental work reminiscent of Blind Melon, the band’s sound is quite successful in their attempt to satisfy Melon fans along with creating a style all of their own in the typically bland alternative rock scene. Starting off with a bang with “Cessna” and the glaring riff of “California” and progressing into more eerie and ethereal tracks like “Wither”, “Fin”, and a potent shining of the band’s potential on “Not Dead”, the debut album of Unified Theory proves to be a worthwhile listen and refreshing release from the ordinary. Unlike the hit and miss formula we’ve seen out of so many albums of this decade, Unified Theory is stunningly consistent in their work by providing 12 solid songs instead of inserting boring, time-filling songs. Unified Theory’s unique sound and encompassment of various musical styling and instruments (which range from keyboard to horns) make them stand out in the crowd and makes for a promising debut for a new band. The self-titled album is definitely worth checking out if you are familiar with Blind Melon or any fan of the
Black Crowes or OK-Computer era Radiohead. Unified Theory’s debut is truly a diamond in the rough of modern day music, and it’s a real shame that the band disbanded the year following the album’s release, for their future shined with potential.

SCORE: 7.5

Justin's Bottom Line: This band is worth listening to because of their distinctive sound and their close-to-perfection amalgamation of vocal styling and guitar work. Though the album is not exactly a Blind Melon replica, in the end the mixture of old and new approaches to the songs makes this debut a truly enriching experience all around.

SCORE: 8

Joe: Absolutely astounding. I can’t believe this album was overlooked by the mainstream when it was first released. This album is a definite buy.
